“Dusk wrapped itself around the day just as I turned the key in the lock of our home away from home for the weekend. The kids eagerly sought out their room – inspecting every nook and cranny while I took a moment to exhale from a long displacing week. On the counter, a fresh loaf of sourdough, cured meats, local eggs, a bottle of rose and a friendly note greeted us. The thoughtfulness felt like a big hug. Within moments, Isiah figured out the kettle. First thing is first: make tea. Book and blanket in hand, Fefe staked her claim in a cosy chair while I unpacked provisions from the farm shop up the road.
After a week without a kitchen, I welcomed this beautiful well-designed space to cook a feast for my family. Cory called from the road. He was on his way just in time for diner – and bringing wine. For me, this weekend retreat was more than a time to reset or rediscovery – it was a time of pleasure and permission. The pleasure of just being present with my family, feasting on good food, climbing into a bed of fresh linen at night and sinking my bear feet into sheep’s skins when waking. Who knew I was missing this all of my life (I’ve now order two for my bed!)
And it was a time of permission: to soak in a hot warm bath of sunrise, to read for endless hours, to linger over the paper with no to-do list hanging over me and to curl up next to Fefe by the fire watching Gilmore Girls with mugs of cocoa.
When Sunday rolled around, I felt a sadness at the thought of leaving. There are endless places to spend your time away – but I can say what The Farmstead has created is nothing short of transporting. Anyone can create a beautiful place – this is a space with a deep soul.”
